'Flight Lessons: A folk opera' returns to Rhythmix with an all-star ensemble

It’s been a joy and a privilege to realize my Flight Lessons folk opera project with the assistance of some truly amazing musical artists and singers. This past week several of us had some fun recording the title track at Ben Bernstein's Petting Zoo — Tania, Liz and Kwame’s harmonies are a healing sound bath and Tania’s isolated piano part is so pretty I had to share — and I’m thrilled all seven of us will be returning to the Rhythmix Cultural Works stage on Friday, April 17. Please join us! Based on a true story about the Peregrine Falcons and humans living at the convergence of wild and urban habitats on Oakland’s Fruitvale Bridge, FlightLessons is a two-act, multi-character folk opera exploring themes of home, adaptation and recovery. The narrative-in-song follows an urban wildlife biologist who monitors the breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting on a bridge and how their lives intersect with the human inhabitants of the neighborhood after one of the birds is shot.
