Radio...and video

“Am I dressed OK for radio?” I asked Kwame before leaving the house. I've played KALX live a number of times and knew the studio room well. Two windows looked ito the DJ booth and the live sound engineers room. We'd play in a plain walled room with office lighting.   I wore a light shirt over a T-shirt with my jeans and minimal makeup.

When I arrived I remembered the note in the advance about a livestream. There cameras were affixed to the wall and two corners. There would be video as well. “Oh well!” I…

July is Alive: KALX Live & SF Summer of Music

It's a new month, a new day, and anything is possible, including world peace and maintaining democracy — despite the stiff headwinds —which is why I'm sending you a photo of me floating through the cosmos. It's easy to feel discouraged, but as the great Patti Smith sings "the people have the power." That's you and that's me, and that's why I'm continuing to sing and makes songs amid it all, including tomorrow in Niles, and this weekend on the radio (from Berkeley) and onstage in Alameda. Voices matter, vot

After much doing, we finally landed a Flight Lessons show in Sonoma County. Huge appreciation to those who held onto their tickets and my bandmates for hanging in through several rescheduled dates and a last-minute venue change to come out to Soft Medicine Sanctuary on Saturday night. The Sebastopol venue turned out to be a great space for the show & Kyle Alden played a beautiful opening set. Thank you Erica Sorenson for the photo. Hoping to do more of these Flight Lessons shows soon!

May Days: Doubling Down on Beauty

It's been nearly eight years since I made Beauty Everywhere but the title track still describes how I'm moving through the world. When I wrote that song, I was in need of an extra dose of hope and I started making lists of the beautiful things I’d see each day —  sidewalk chalk art, an ocean view — to remind me of the wonder of simply being.  Many of its lyrics are paraphrased from what my dad showed me to do as a child: to notice “all the world’s a miracle/ all the flowers coming up in bloom / all this

Natural wonders: Words, music and the eclipse

I've just returned from a road trip across the Southwest to Texas for the Kerrclipse Music & Eclipse festival and back. It was a moving experience to witness the eclipse — a true natural wonder — with a community of friends and fellow musicians at the storied site of the Kerrville Folk Festival. We were fortunate that the clouds cleared enough to get a good look at various stages of the partial eclipse as well as the full eclipse and the sun’s corona! Totality was an out of this world experience! Hearing…
