September Music: In the Garden, On the Radio...

So much good stuff happening these days! We had a great time playing in August, including the show at Viracocha (left) and on KALX Saturday. Lots coming up...

Including this coming Saturday, you can find me live and in person at a very cool house concert in Alameda:

Monica Pasqual House Concert with Deborah Crooks & Sara Lovell - 7pm
27 Powers Court
Alameda CA 94501

I've been dipping into Laurie Wagner's 27 Powers creative writing community since I moved to Alameda several years ago, so I'm delighted to play there. Icing on an already good cake is performing in support of 6-time IMA & 6-time Emmy winner  Monica Pasqual, from the band, Blame Sally, whose music has been featured on soundtracks for PBS, The History Channel and National Geographic Television. Berkeley-based songwriter (and fellow Wild Writer) Sara Lovell will also be sharing her songs. It's going to be an incredible concert under the stars at a gem of a setting! Advanced tickets recommended. Please join us! $20, kids are free - wine and snacks on the house.

After more than a year of work, the new CD "Little Bird" featuring 11 of my songs, arranged and produced by the amazing Art Khu, is complete. I picked up the master earlier this week and the CD will be released officially November 5. Nonetheless, (other) little birds tell me there's a good chance you'll be able to pick up advance copies at some shows before that date. :D. Here's a preview of some of the tracks (if you've missed them )on Soundcloud:

Back in the Bay: Live music in SF, Walnut Creek & Pacifica

I'm just back from a couple weeks of travel and gigs in Southern CA, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. What fun it was to play in new — and incredibly beautiful — places. We had a great time's great to be home! I spent the day cleaning up the garden and am jazzed to see I haven't missed all my sunflowers blooming.  Now, I'm looking forward to playing several local shows over the next couple weeks, starting tonight in San Francisco at Brainwash Cafe. I've played here a lot over the years and it's a casual hangout in SOMA where you can get some food, listen to live music...and do your laundry! Katie Garibaldi is hosting so it's sure to be a positive, happy event. More details on upcoming events follows.

Sitting with Agnes-Committed Lines

One of the songs on the upcomong CD 'Little Bird', 'Committed Lines,' was partly inspired by the life and work of artist Agnes Martin. Martin was an internationally renowned Abstract Expressionist who lived much of her life in New Mexico, painting highly minimalist works, often based on lines and grids. She was intent upon conveying inner truth and beauty and was relentless in her pursuit. An article about her work, first read many years ago, was, personally, revelatory. Over the years, I've seen some of her paintings in museums in San Francisco and New York. I was very excited about the opportunity to see the Agnes Martin Gallery in the Harwood Museum of Art, while in Taos earlier this week. Before leaving town on Wednesday, we stopped by the museum (the Harwood had a great collection of contemporary New Mexico artists and a fine representation of Hispanic art and religious iconography as well). The 7 pieces at the Harwood were painted to be exhibited together, and a friend of Martin's constructed the wooden viewing seats, providing a serene setting and an ideal vantage from which to enjoy the paintings. Truth, beauty, yes.
"My paintings are not about what is seen. They are about what is known forever in the mind." - Agnes Martin, 1912-2004

Deborah Crooks & 35 other Musicians @ National Music Day Pop-up Parklet's for a Cause in SF

Friday, June 21, 2013 is National Music Day. In addition to a special performance at The Monkey House in Berkeley that evening, I'm participating in Pop-Up Parklet's for a Cause, 12p - 12:30pm, playing at the parklet in front of Brainwash Cafe,1122 Folsom Street, in San Francisco. More than 35 artists will be performing in Parklets all over the city, a musical happening to raise funds for local charities including Bread & Roses, City Youth Now, Woman, Inc, LYRIC and 5 Gyres.  I hope to raise $100 (suggested donation is only $5) for these organizations that help so many of those in need. Please come on down to Brainwash, grab lunch or a coffee and spare $5 for a good cause.
If you can't make it down to SOMA at noon, you can donate online at Hear it Local.
